One of my Christmas presents this year was 18th Century Embroidery Techniques by Gail Marsh. I’ve wanted this book for a long time and it exceeded my expectations. I was expecting something informative but dull with black and white drawings but 18th Century Embroidery Techniques is a beautiful and entertaining book in full colour with many photos in addition to all the hand drawn diagrams. It explains many 18th century embroidery techniques along with a presentation of all the tools used. There’s also a glossary that was very useful to someone like me who’s completely new to embroidery.

I love 18th century embroidery. I just bought a 19th century silk Kimono today that is hand made hand sewed with beautiful embroidery. Part of the sleeve reminds me of 18th century French Chinoiserie silk fabric check out my blog post on it.

I’ve got a copy of this book it is absolutely mouthwatering to look at. Perhaps one day I will have more time to enjoy embroidery from the past. I enjoy the magazine called Piecework published by Interweave Press. http://www.interweavestore.com/Needlework/Magazin…
Piecework always have some project with a well researched historical theme I would like to do.

I absolutely love this book as well. I can’t wait to have more time to work on some embroidery!!!

I’m trying to replace a book I originally purchased in the 1980’s; it was focussed on French embroidery techniques of the 18th century. The primary cover color was a deep magenta and it fit into a similarly-colored slipcase. Very detailed, with a good deal of information on sequin embellishment.

I’d appreciate any information on its title! Thanks.
