A visit at Kina slott
Posted Aug 16, 2010 at 14:06 CEST in Buildings and interiors, Costuming, Fashion, Flickr, My costumes, and Photos.
A couple of days ago I went to Kina slott (the Chinese pavilion at Drottningholm) to take some photos of my robe à la polonaise since I realised it unintentionally matches the colours of the palace exterior. My boyfriend Henrik was the photographer.

This looks like it is right out of a 18th century painting! I love the colors or your dress with the background of the building. The wrought iron is amazing. Henrik is a great photographer as this takes me back to the 18th century.

How lovely! Are you SURE you weren’t subconsciously visualising China when you planned for your gown..? ;)
Was this before or after the burglary there?

Thank you! :) I might have since I’m quite obsessed with it, but I was actually trying to emulate the colours and trim of this dress: http://18thcenturyblog.com/images/uploads/1346_me…
I hadn’t even heard of the burglary! I looked it up now and it was after, but everything was open as usual and the guide didn’t mention anything.

I love love the colors!

You look absolutely fabulous. Love all the detailing in the back of the gown. Is that all your natural hair? If so I need to know your hairstyling secrets!

Thank you! It’s mostly a wig but I did style it :)

A beautiful dress, beautifully photographed! Perfect location for inspiring photo shoot. Do you hand stitch the whole ensemble or do you do some by machine? Also, where do you source your fabrics? The colours seem so historically accurate. Sorry for all the questions. I have been enjoying your blog for quite a while but this is the first time I have commented.

Thank you! I always hand stitch all of my 18th century stuff. Actually my machine hasn’t been working for a couple of years now so I couldn’t use it even if I wanted to :)
For fabrics I love this site: http://www.puresilks.biz They have a huge selection of beautiful silk taffettas and the prices are great. I needed silk ribbon for the trimming of this dress and I got that from this site: http://www.silkribbon.com

Thank you!

That is simply a beautiful dress. I cannot believe you sewed it by hand! I have been longing for a long time to sew a dress like that one, if you don’t mind me asking how many yards of material it took to make it? And did you have a pattern for it?
Johanna, johannaost.com
Thank you! I’m afraid I can’t remember how many yards I used and I can’t find the receipt. I based it on a pattern from The Cut of Women’s Clothes: 1600-1930 by Norah Waugh. You can read more about it in this entry: http://18thcenturyblog.com/2010/06/1770s-robe-a-l…
