Where did you find the self portrait of Gilbert Stuart?

I don’t remember where I found that exact image, but the original painting is apparently in the Tate collection: http://www.tate.org.uk/servlet/ViewWork?cgroupid=…

Good heavens! Gilbert Stuart looks just like Jeremy Northam!

Family Portrait Artist Ka, portraitsofpeo…

They knew how to dress up for a portrait. I was definitely born in the wrong century!

Thank you again, Johanna!
The Metropolitan Museum in NY has published a (catalogue) book about Gilbert by Carrie Rebora Barratt and Ellen G. Miles, 2004. Not sure if you can order it online. I got my copy in a bookstore. It’s an extremely thorough review of his work, and even gives glimpses into his working methods.
Cheers,
Kelly

I can strongly recommend that catalogue on Gilbert Stuart as I worked on it.I researched the chapter on Stuart in Dublin,(pp75-99).My favourite picture in that section was the double portrait of two young girls,Anna Dorothea Foster and Charlotte Anne Dick, doing needlework (Cat.No.21,p89).Its a wonderful and little known painting which we dated to c.1790-91.
