John Downman

Portrait of a lady said to be Lady Bessborough.
John Downman was an English portrait painter and he’s one of my favourite 18th century artists. He made lots of beautiful little portrait drawings.
As always, let me know if you know where to find more or bigger pictures or perhaps know of a book featuring his work.

The neckline of Harriet’s dress is amazing. I want to copy that someday.

I love it too.

It looks like the book listed on Wikipedia is available in a reprint by Kessinger Publishers. See Amazon. The 1907 original has both color and black and white reproductions. Very nice!

Hey, I just saw this blog, and I love it! It`s perfect. Do you know were I can buy a dress from the 18th century?

Thank you!
You mean an actual 18th century dress? This site has some authentic 18th century pieces for sale: http://www.trousseau.net Although the pictures seem to have disappeared from the site so I’m not sure if they’re still selling them. Occasionally you can find something on ebay as well but usually just smaller accessories.
If you just mean an 18th century reproduction dress you can check out the “costumers and web shops” category here on the blog: http://18thcenturyblog.com/costumers-web-shops.

Thought you might like to see the Downman portrait of my great, gt. gt. gt. grandmother Sarah Ann Sharpe as an 18 year old painted in 1790.

You and your correspondents might enjoy looking at the work of Elisabeth Vigee-Lebrun, who was also working in the late 18th century. Much of her work is available on the net. Different medium and style, but seeing the same things?

I have written about Vigée-Lebrun earlier here: http://18thcenturyblog.com/2007/08/elisabeth-loui…

Currently on ebay is this painting purportedly by Downman. Not convinced but definitely able artist. Subject’s teeth a little terrifying though, one imagines that like a terrier, once fastened they would never let go.
