Jean-Frederic Schall

Portrait of a lady, said to be Marie-Madeleine Guimard, called Mademoiselle Guimard, ballerina of the Paris Opéra.
I can’t find any information about the artist Jean-Frederic Schall on the internet, but he did a lot of paintings of dancers, as well as romantic and erotic paintings. Most of the paintings I’ve seen seem to be made in the 1780s. He did some lovely paintings and if you have any tips on where to find more paintings and information do let me know.
The beloved portrait, 1780s. This is one of my favourite 18th century paintings.
Promeneuse à l’éventail .

Absolutely lovely! I remember I have one or two paintings of him in a book and probably some information, I’ll look this evening if I can find it.

What a charming painting! Her dress is a great colour combination, I may have to steal it!

For a very nice entry in English see v.12 of Benezit “Dictionary of Artists (2006), p.538-540. I also found a 1927 book in French by Andre Girodie, “Un Peintre de Fetes Galantes: Jean-Frederic Schall.”

His dancing girls look a bit too thin in the waist to me but the portraits are great! I am painting these kind of antique paintings on canvas or on walls . Did something of Fragonard, the Ballerina, can be found on my website.
Schall is the only one who had not a good eye for the proportions. Nevertheless he became famous… great blog, love it as I love this time.
