Blackadder is a great British comedy series, or actually a series of series. The third series, Blackadder the Third, is set in the late 18th century, and the costumes are of a much higher quality than what you might expect. Some attributes are obviously exaggerated for comic effect, and the costumes are not always chronologically correct, but there are some really wonderful outfits in there. The picture above is Hugh Laurie as the prince regent, in my opinion the funniest character on the show, and after the cut are some blurry screenshots of lovely costumes.

I love this particular series of Blackadder! Especially the episode about the Scarlet Pimpernel :p
I think the reason why this show has such fine costumes overall (the Elizabethan ones from the first season are also good) is that they have access to the BBC clothing archive. I remember reading somewhere that all costumes from all of the period costume dramas they’ve produced over the years are stored in a warehouse somewhere, so that they can be pulled out and reused as needed. For instance, one of Helen Mirren’s gowns from ‘The Madness of King George’ was used in a recent episode of ‘Doctor Who’.

Just discovered your blog. Love it! Blackadder is a huge favorite of mine. I broke down and bought the set for myself. There’s a one-off special they did around 2000 called Black Adder Back and Forth. Involves a time machine, Roman Britain, Robin Hood and more–hilarious!

Thanks! So glad you like it :D That special usually airs on new years eve here in Sweden.

Hurray for Blackadder!!! Thankyou for including this in your blog, it’s my favourite show ever. George is a brilliant character (as are his “enourmous trousers”) but I loved every single character in the series as well (all 4series but especially BlackadderIII :)

I just looove Black Adder series! Especially the second and the third! So hilarious!
Do you know the series “Let them eat cake” by French and Saunders? Not so good as Black Adder, but pretty fun…

I really like “Let them eat cake”! I love French and Saunders and the costumes are surprisingly good in that one too.
