Lasse Hallström’s Casanova is not fantastic, but it’s fun and charming and I liked it. Costume wise it’s pretty horrible, lots of outfits that look like cheap masquerade costumes and many ugly wigs. But there’s one exception and that’s Victoria, played by Natalie Dormer. Her outfits are beautiful and she was also by far my favourite character in this movie. I loved her. Some more pictures behind the cut.

I did a whole bunch of research into Casanova and his memoirs when I was adapting a novel about him into a play, and this movie made me literally shake my fists at the screen. I’m sure it’s a nice little romantic romp or whatever, but the real story is so awesome and dramatic that I can’t understand why they would want to change it.

Oh I know, it’s all fantasy. It could have been so much better if they went for at least a little bit of historic accuracy. And also, in a movie about Casanova I want to see him seduce a bunch of girls, not falling for one really boring one. But I still found it enjoyable.
