Hi Johanna
I’m wondering if you have any insight into this. I seem to remember from flipping through fashion history books long ago…. but I can’t seem to locate much information online.
Was there a time in the 1700s when it was fashionable to have your bodice cut just below the nipple? The plate on this post looks like her nipples could not possibly be covered.
Nipple exposure came up in conversation and I’m worried I was imagining this and perhaps misleading my friends. So I thought I would verify. I figured if anyone knew, it would be you.

Hi!
Especially in the late 18th century (80s and early 90s) corsets and bodices were cut very low and often below the nipple. The breasts were then covered with a fichu (a shawl sort of) that could be very sheer. In portraits and paintings nipples were pretty often exposed in low cut dresses but I don’t know if that was practised in “real life” as well. I remember reading something about nipples being rouged or even pierced for this type of fashion, but I don’t remember the source for that.
